Formocresol and glutaraldehyde applied to the remaining radicular pulp may be
absorbed systemically during the vital pulpotomy.
The present study was performed to investigate the acute toxicity of formocresol and
glutaraldehyde when administered intravenously in rats. The animals were divided into 3
groups. The thirst control group received physiologic saline, the second Buckley's
formocresol and the third 2% buffered glutaraldehyde solution intravenously at a dose of
0.15m1/kg respectively. Blood pressure and heart rate recordings and timed urine
collections were made for 3 hours after injection of the drugs. Blood samples were
taken for chemical analyses and the tissue samples of liver, kidney, heart and lung were
collected for histological evaluation after 6 hours.
The following results were obtained ;
1. Blood pressure and heart rate were significantly decreased following administration
of formocresol or glutaraldehyde.
2. S-AST and S-ALT values of the formooesol group were significantly higher than
those of the control group. In the glutaraldehyde group, S-AST value was higher than
that of the control group.
3. No significant changes were observed in renal function following administration of
formocresol or glutaraldehyde.
4. Tissue injury was not evident histologically 6 hours after administration of the drug.
These results indicate that formocresol and glutaraldehyde may cause a systemic toxic
effect, especially on the hepatic tissue, and that formocresol may be more toxic than
glutaraldehyde.
